  • Ultra Light Dragon Staff

The new ultra light dragon staff is designed for styles that are faster and do more traps and redirects then traditional dragons. The important factors to consider when selecting a dragon staff are spoke construction, grip style, and minimized exposed metal.
The staff body (5' long, 19 oz Al, 17oz CF) is made from 3/4" thin walled 7075-T6 aerospace grade aluminum or 3/4" carbon fiber. 7075-T6 which is twice the strength of standard 6061-T6 aluminum (and only 15% weaker than titanium). This staff diameter fits comfortably on the body and rolls at a very controllable rate. Towards the end of each staff, square aluminum ensures the spoke wicks stick out at 90° angles from each other. 2" wicks top each end of the dragon staff.

These slightly lighter dragon staff wicks are 2.5oz each, which cause the staff to roll and reverse rolling direction with more response then normal dragons. Good spoke construction ensures impact durability and smooth movement.

The 6.5” spokes have a 1/4” steel cable, stainless steel base and aluminum attachment at the wick. This extremely stiff cable provides a small amount of shock absorption that prevents hard drops from damaging the spines or their connection points to the dragon staff body. Each cable has a threaded rod on one end, enabling easy screwing and unscrewing from the dragon staff body. 2" wicks are firmly attached to the other side of each cable, providing a 3:30 minute burn.*

* Burn times are estimated based on recorded burns using pure "white gas" / Coleman's Liquid Camp Fuel. Actual burn times may vary based on individual spinning style, length of fuel soak, and other factors.

Exposed Metal
Most severe equipment burns come from searing-hot exposed metal, not from the wicks. The wicks on the staff and the spokes are attached with recessed screws (less exposed metal than screws and no need for retightening), and the staff ends are covered with two wick layers, creating a long-lasting cover for a potentially sharp and hot metal edge.

We provide three grip options:

Classic Grip is a traditional adhesive-backed rubber grip. It is tear-resistant, and has a very slight ridge. To maintain its grippy surface, you should periodically clean this grip with soap, water, and the rough side of a sponge.

EPDM Grip is an adhesive-backed alternative to standard grip. It is slightly softer and produces a perfectly smooth grip surface, but is more susceptible to surface damage. However, minor surface damage actually makes it textured, resulting in this surface becoming progressively grippier over time. It also lasts longer than Standard Grip in high-humid environments. It can also leave a light black residue on hands and clothes, though it washes off easily.

Om Grip is a yoga mat based grip with adhesive-backing. It has more give then the other two options and is slightly less grippy than EPDM. This is especially good for dragon staff work, where you don't want the hair on your arms pulled out and the extra cushion will allow for longer practice times. It also comes in colors and does not leave any residue on your arms after use (like EPDM does). It is not as grippy as EPDM, so for those artist looking for the most tacky contact staff grip, EPDM is probably a better option.
